On Being “Too Sensitive”

I’m a flower.

I’m always the first to admit that, yes, I am sensitive, I do cry easily, and I feel everything all the time — sometimes all at once. Sometimes, it gets to be too much and I start wishing that I could turn my emotions off.

But, honestly, I think it’s better to be sensitive than not.

Sensitive people are that way because we are in touch with nature and the universe in a way that not many people are. At least, that’s what I think. I don’t think that human beings are meant to be insensitive. I think, in a way, we are all empathetic but a lot of people learn early on to turn off their empathy. Maybe it’s because they were taken advantage of for their kindness, maybe they had some personal trauma that taught them that it’s not safe to feel too much, or maybe they just think it’s cool to not care.

Whatever the reason is, I think a lot of people just aren’t in touch with their emotions in the way that they should be. Or could be. I completely understand why many people choose to present a tough exterior to the world. I understand why so many people choose to only show their vulnerability to the people they trust most.

I know and have experienced many people who act tough externally but present their softer, more emotional side to me privately. And, honestly, I find it flattering that people trust me enough to let their guards down like that.

I think that being emotionally vulnerable and sensitive is a strength. And it’s been said before but I want to drive in the point that I think it takes courage to choose to be soft in a world that is oftentimes harsh and unforgiving.

Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let the pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness.

Continuing to be soft, sweet, and kind will benefit you. The universe will recognize your genuine energy and it will respond to that. What you put out into the world is what you attract and welcome into your life. I say that from experience. There’s nothing wrong with choosing toughness, and I understand that many people choose to suppress their softness for various reasons. I would just like to give some insight into why I am the way that I am, and why I like being me.

And regardless of whether you choose softness or toughness, remember to always keep your kind, loving, forgiving nature. Holding onto hate and bitterness will only hurt you. To live your life to full potential and to achieve fulfillment, I think it’s so important to keep love in your heart, always.
